A student wishing to seek registration as a marriage celebrant must
complete the following 4 compulsory units of competency,
plus the 5 core units in Celebrancy, plus 4 elective units.

Establish and maintain knowledge of legal
responsibilities of a marriage celebrant

Develop an effective relationship with a marrying
couple
CHCCEL404A
Plan a marriage ceremony in line with legal
requirements
CHCCEL405A
Conduct and review a marriage ceremony in line with
legal requirements

Duration of course
Up to 12 months to complete.
Method of completion Tutor
assisted
Assignments
to be returned by mail or email, with role plays to be
conducted in a face-to-face session, or
filmed and transposed onto a DVD or video tape.
If completing all 13 units, Certificate IV in Celebrancy will be awarded
within 10 days of completion of the
course.
If completing individual units of competency, a Statement of
Attainment for each unit will be issued within 10 days of
completion of the unit of competency.

units, with varying costs per unit.

Those
completing the qualification entitled “Certifiate IV in
Celebrancy" will be awarded a Certificate that is recognised by the Federal Attorney-General’s
Department. Attainment of this qualification is a pre-requisite to applying to become an authorised
marriage celebrant.
Other
criteria include that you be deemed a “fit and proper person”,
and that you are not in a business where there could be
seen to be a conflict of interest with your celebrancy services.
Satisfactory
completion of this qualification not only satisfies one of the
criteria required for authorisation as a marriage celebrant,
it gives a comprehensive basis on which to build a successful
celebrancy enterprise.
